TRANSFORMATIVE LANGUAGE LEARNING: FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE
Stacey Johnson, Vanderbilt University
Session
San Diego Convention Center
Room: Room 17A
Learning a language and culture can be a life-changing, transformative experience. In this session, classroom instructors and program coordinators will explore how to design and deliver language instruction that has the potential to transform students' thinking about and interaction with the world around them. This session will briefly explore the theoretical model of transformative learning, and some specific, practical steps that research has established as best practices in promoting transformative learning in classroom settings, whether that classroom is fully face-to-face, hybrid, or fully online. Participants will receive sample learning materials and work collaboratively redesigning language learning materials. Participants will also have the opportunity to experiment with face-to-face and digital tools that enable these learning processes.
