AAUSC mentor-mentee sample notification letter
October 18, 2001
Ben Rifkin (mentor)
Andrei Zaitsev (mentee)
Dear colleagues:
Išm finally writing the łofficial˛ letter on your matching for the mentoring program of the American Association of University Supervisors and Coordinators (AAUSC). I hope that youšve been able to communicate and that youšve gotten to know each other.
Goal: The goal of the program is to support our newer colleagues in their transition years into the profession or a new job situation.
Roles of mentor and mentee: The role of the mentor is to serve as a contact and support person for the new supervisor/coordinator. She/he should be available by email or phone to answer questions and provide support and ideas. Topics of discussion might include classroom observation systems, how to deal with difficult TAs or adjuncts, time management, and the balance between supervision and research. The mentee should also be available to reach out and send emails or make calls to the mentor. We do not want to be too prescriptive, but we suggest that you make an attempt to contact each other at least every three to four weeks and more at the beginning so that you can build and maintain your relationship.
A proposal: We hope that you are able to meet at the November 2001 ACTFL annual meeting in Washington DC or at some other professional gathering during the year. This is not a requirement, of course, but AAUSC has $200 for each of you for any initial trip that you might make to visit each other
Please address any questions or comments to me at the addresses below. Thank you for your interest and good luck.
Sincerely,
Kathryn Corl
