lpd mentoring program

AAUSC is now offering a mentoring program for new supervisors/coordinators of second language programs. We will match experienced supervisors/coordinators with those who are just beginning or who have served in that capacity for only one or two years.

There are limited funds to support contacts between mentors and mentees; to submit your expenses, use the mentor program reimbursement form.

goal The goal of the program is to support our newer colleagues in their transition years into the profession or a new job situation. Often, as you know, the supervisor/coordinator/LPD has a unique set of responsibilities within a language department, and there are no senior colleagues with the requisite expertise or experience to guide a newcomer. The AAUSC mentoring program is designed to give you access to a network of people and resources to get you off to a good start in your new job.
role of mentor The role of mentor is to serve as a contact and support person for the new supervisor/coordinator. She/he should be available by email or phone to answer questions and provide support and ideas. Topics of discussion might include classroom observation systems, how to deal with difficult TAs, time management, and the balance between supervision and research.
role of mentee The mentee should also be available to reach out and send emails or make calls to the mentor. We do not want to be too prescriptive, but we suggest that you make an attempt to contact each other at least every three to four weeks so that you can build and maintain your relationship. We hope that you are able to meet at some professional gathering during the year.
process Matching mentors and mentees is the job of the AAUSC language section coordinators (see the who's who page for contact information). We will make an effort to follow your preferences about the kind of mentor you would like (but we may have difficulty depending on the pool of applicants). Once we’ve matched you, we will write each of you and ask the mentor to make the first contact. Any confusion should be reported to the co-presidents of AAUSC. The mentoring program’s success will depend on the willingness of both of you to work together.
