Wenhao Diao

Wenhao Diao is an Assistant Professor in the Department of East Asian Studies and the Second Language Acquisition and Teaching program at the University of Arizona. She directs the summer language program, Arizona-in-Shanghai, which she launched in 2015. She holds a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University.

Diao's research deals with the sociolinguistic and sociocultural aspects of study abroad. She has guest co-edited a special volume of L2 Journal on study abroad in the 21st century. She has also conducted projects comparing the experiences of study abroad students learning different languages, including a Center for Applied Linguistics project involving Chinese, Spanish, and Russian. Her research has appeared on journals such as Applied Linguistics and Modern Language Journal. Her work has been funded by the U.S. Department of Education. She has also won numerous awards, including the Jiede Empirical Research Award from the Chinese Language Teachers Association (CLTA) and the Top Abstract award from the 29th Second Language Research Forum.

Diao teaches Chinese linguistics, language pedagogy, and language and culture at the University of Arizona. She has previously taught Chinese language pedagogy and Chinese language courses at the Middlebury Language Schools, Carnegie Mellon University, and the University of Virginia.
